THE COMMISSION

Why it was made this way

The safari jacket was designed for heat and for use: pockets that carry things, cloth that breathes, a cut you can move in. Most of the versions sold today are cotton drill, which wrinkles on the first wearing and softens into a shirt by the third. This commission started from the other end — with a proper suiting cloth.

Standeven’s Summerstrand is woven in Yorkshire from 94% wool and 6% mohair in a high-twist yarn, at 225 grams. High-twist yarns are spun hard, which makes the finished cloth crisp, springy and open, in the tradition of a fresco: air passes through it, and it throws off creases rather than holding them. The mohair adds a dry, cool hand and a faint lustre that keeps an earthy colour from looking dull.

It is cut as a hunting jacket with a notch lapel and a three-roll-two front. The lapel rolls softly past the top button, so the jacket fastens on the middle one and the top buttonhole sits in the curve of the roll. It is a relaxed front, and on a field jacket it looks exactly right.

The four patch pockets with flaps are the signature of the garment and they are meant to be used. What stops them turning the jacket into workwear is what sits behind them: full canvas through the chest, so the front holds a tailored line whatever is in the pockets.

It is half-lined — lining through the shoulders and sleeves so it goes on easily over a shirt, and left open through the back so heat can escape. A double slit vent finishes it. Worn with linen or cotton trousers, it is one of the most useful jackets a man in Singapore can own.
