The Modern Professional: Drago Bluefeel

A single-breasted jacket in a Biella hopsack built for the working week. It stretches when you reach, sheds a passing shower, and looks at six o’clock the way it did at nine.

THE COMMISSION

Why it was made this way

A business jacket in Singapore lives two lives a day. Most of it is spent in air-conditioned rooms; the rest is the walk between them, through heat, humidity and, on a bad afternoon, a downpour. The commission was simple to state: one cloth that could take all of it and not show any of it by the end of the day.

The answer was Drago’s Bluefeel, woven in Biella from 100% wool. It is a working cloth before it is anything else. The mill finishes it for natural stretch, crease resistance, water repellency and thermo-regulation, and it does so PFC-free — the rain beads off without the fluorinated chemistry older repellent finishes depended on. The performance is in the finishing, not in a blend: pick the cloth up and it is still plain wool.

At 290 grams it is not a lightweight, and on paper that is a lot of cloth for this city. The weave is what makes it wearable. A hopsack pairs its yarns in a small basket pattern, leaving a more open structure than a flat worsted, so air moves through it. The texture also does something for a solid cloth: under office lighting it has depth rather than the flatness of a plain weave.

It is cut single-breasted with a peak lapel and two buttons. The peak usually belongs to double-breasted fronts and evening wear; on a two-button jacket it lifts the line of the shoulders and gives the front a little authority without the ceremony. The breast pocket is a barchetta, the curved Neapolitan pocket, while the lower pockets are kept to clean welts so nothing interrupts the front.

A double slit vent, for sitting down and for letting heat out on the walk. Full canvas, hand-padded so the lapel rolls rather than lies flat. And fully lined, because this jacket spends its day indoors over a shirt: a full lining lets it slide on and off cleanly, and in a cold meeting room it is exactly the layer you want.
